History
AIDS activists from Tijuana, Baja California and neighboring San Diego, California who were already acquainted with one another, organized the "Alliance Against AIDS" of Tijuana in 1983. They realized the compelling need to address a serious, growing health problem in the region in the way of AIDS awareness and prevention outreach. More importantly, the providing of medical care for AIDS patients in Tijuana, which was non-existent during that era, had to be established.
The Alliance thus started out with the recruitment of volunteer medical staff, and solicited the donation of medications, basic medical equipment, and other needed supplies. They also secured authorization from Tijuana's public health department to occupy a portion of that facility's clinic in order to provide HIV services.
In 1989, the Alliance was able to secure its first own private medical facility, thanks primarily to its first grant from AIDS WALK San Diego; thus Clinica Acosida Tijuana came into being.
In 1996, the clinic was re-located to its current, more spacious facility.

Organization
The Acosida board of directors meets once per month to review and evaluate the clinic budget, clinic services and objectives, certain special needs patients, and to discuss and plan participation in special fundraising, HIV-related educational outreach and prevention projects, and other events. (Some board members are HIV+).
Acosida staff members document and maintain records of each patient medical consultation; each counseling session and HIV test, and of every item that is dispensed.
HIV test result statistics are maintained, and include such information as gender, age, sexual orientation, chemical abuse status, and the probable or suspected cause of infection for those who test seropositive. The sharing of these statistics with other organizations are considered upon request.
No Acosida staff or board members receive a salary. The primary physician and nurses receive a modest monthly stipend, which is partly subsidized by modest, non-obligatory donations patients make for their medical consultations.
Funding
Most of Acosida's annual funding since 1989 has been granted by AIDS WALK San Diego (listed on our "Links" page). We also occasionally receive more modest donations from other outside sources.
